Spyware is like a terrible virus in my opinion and I frankly hate all applications that do such things. I have read some stories that have been remarkably unbelievable and people have lost everything from malicious acts like this.  
On the other side I read abut people using spy software, and how helpful was this kind of applications for them. Parents that saved their child from the hands of an internet theft, business owners monitoring their employees in order to increase the productivity, and even about suspicious spouse recording the activity of his partner.
